Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), pioneered by Aaron Beck in the early 1960's is today used to treat a variety of mental health problems and adjustment difficulties. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the therapist challenges the client to identify and amend negative thinking patterns by coaching them to develop alternative responses to their beliefs. Often these beliefs can be so well entrenched that the therapist needs to assist the individual to identify the origins of these thoughts. CBT works by addressing the thought distortions and thinking patterns that contribute to a negative belief system. CBT challenges these thought distortions and thinking patterns by coaching individuals to develop alternative responses to their beliefs. When individuals can challenge negative thoughts, ideas and perceptions, they experience an improved sense of self-esteem and well-being.

Developed for the treatment of depression, CBT is now used to treat a variety of illnesses. Cognitive Therapy is short-term, practical, goal oriented and cost effective. CBT is usually completed within ten to twenty sessions, with clients usually noticing change in their thinking patterns within the first few sessions. Maintenance therapy helps to prevent relapse and recurrence of the initial difficulties the client was experiencing. Typically clients will attend maintenance therapy from time to time, the frequency depending on the need of the individual, or can attend on occasion for "booster" sessions to overcome a particular thought distortion, which left untreated, may contribute to relapse of the preexisting problems.
